Encouraging employees, customers and others to practice good respiratory, hand and surface hygiene is a key part of workplace infection control. Ensuring the availability of hygiene supplies such as as tissues, liquid hand soap, detergent and alcohol-based hand gel is an essential part of pandemic preparedness.
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is equipment used or worn to reduce exposure to specific hazards. Where a risk cannot be completely eliminated, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, protective eyewear gowns and gloves, may be used to control the risk. PPE should not be relied upon where more effective methods are available (for example, avoiding close contact with influenza patients).
Guidance on the use of PPE during an influenza pandemic is available in Australian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza.
